Director, Strategy

The Opportunity

MightyHive/MediaMonks Toronto is looking for a Director, Strategy who wants to help us disrupt established conventions for the role of strategy in the creation of digital-first solutions to business and brand challenges. You’ll lead and contribute to defining the overall strategic direction and launch of ground-breaking products and campaigns across the digital ecosystem for existing and prospective MediaMonks clients.

The ideal candidate is a problem-solver with a maker mentality, who understands strategy’s role in arriving at clear, tangible and pragmatic action plans for awesome production. Abstract thought leadership and research for the sake of research is not what MediaMonks is about.

The Director, Strategy ensures our strategy solutions are both innovative and effective. Successful applicants must be champions of smart thinking that hero end-to-end digital customer journeys. You think of brand strategy as the creation of an evolving, flexible system – adaptable across touch points, cultural shifts and rooted in the connection between brand truth and audience understanding.

You are also tasked with ensuring the formats and platforms proposed for our creative solutions are the ones where those ideas can be most effective. As a leader in this area, you will advise on channels and formats, audiences, tactics, and even granular creative best-practices to keep MediaMonks on the leading edge. Your role as strategist is to understand the audiences, their behavior on each channel and how to best resonate with them. You’ll work hand-in-hand with our data analysts and creatives to make sure we have channel-first thinking, as opposed to a single big idea where the channel is merely a distribution platform. Deep understanding of each platform’s role in the full ecosystem is a must.

The successful candidate will work closely with our Director of Media Strategy and leadership teams across a variety of growth accounts and serve as a connection point between Creative, Data, Media, and the Advertising/Marketing technologies that connect them.


  • Lead in the creation of digital brand roadmaps, ecosystem and brand architectures, messaging frameworks, product ideation and campaign strategies
  • Create differentiated and effective end-to-end digital channel and content strategies (content, social, influencers, Google, eCommerce) 
  • Develop insights that unlock creative opportunities designed to resonate with audiences on their platform of choice
  • Finds ways to improve creative opportunity and collaborates to drive growth and effectiveness
  • Develops and implements strategic tools, fosters consistency of usage and evaluation among their managed team
  • Drafts winning project design or business development and leading methodology for business, brand, comms and experience engagements
  • Delivers and owns strategy for elevation plans, with a constant read on health of all accounts under supervision
  • Has in-depth understanding of how the client’s business operates and the motivations of the various stakeholders
  • Work with agency leadership in support of innovative growth opportunities for new and client mandates 
  • Builds strong relationships with creative, account and client teams as well as with partner agencies
  • Provides a prejudicial and informed point of view for how to overcome brand challenges and capture opportunities for growth that may exist
  • Define and create customer journey maps
  • Ensure the work delivers against our clients goals
  • Be a thought leader who can represent MediaMonks Toronto at the intersection of digital culture and marketing
  • Feed in to and support the North American and Global strategy team


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Secondary education in Marketing or related field preferred
  • 8+ years experience in advertising or digital marketing agency setting with a focus on brand strategy and campaign development
  • 5+ years leading and managing teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Compelling portfolio of work with clearly defined role and contributions
  • Proven experience pitching brand strategy and creative services for Agency of Record assignments and completing responses to Requests for Proposals
  • Previous experience working closely with leadership in a scale up environment 
  • Strong analytical and research experience
  • Strong grasp on popular culture, with a keen understanding of what is relevant and an eye for upcoming digital trends
  • Strong qualitative background in identifying trends and opportunities within media advertising and marketing technology industry
  • Expert written and verbal communicator, with the ability to craft engaging campaigns from abstract creative concepts/data driven business identified challenges/opportunities
  • Ability to analyze insights from data and creating actionable solutions to business challenges
  • Ability to assess strategic alignment using qualitative review, problem-solving and analysis skills, combined with sound business judgment
  • Ability to establish and foster strong relationships
  • Ability to handle conflict or difficult situations with perspective, even temper and kindness
  • High level of attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ambitious team player who can manage a piece of the business independently / take day-to-day ownership of a significant pillar of the business
